“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you” (John 14:27)

We are faced with so many things that make peace seem almost impossible, or at least a little foolish to imagine. Stories of inequality and injustice, interreligious conflict and the ecological crisis surround us.

For these reasons and more, there has perhaps never been a more urgent need to discover the contemplative heart within us. If our hearts are peaceful, we radiate peace around us and become places of peace for the world.

Christianity has an ancient tradition of meditation (silent prayer) that can change a person and change the world. The simple practice takes us beyond words to discover that we are one with the source of life and love who is peace.

Through a series of short talks, meditation and conversation we will explore this ancient Christian practice as a practical response to Jesus’ call to be his presence in the world.

This experiential workshop will look at:

  • the essentials of the simple practice
  • forming a new relationship with our life, with God and with each other characterised by freedom and compassion
  • how we can become places of peace for the world by establishing peace in ourselves

About the School of Contemplative Life

The School of Contemplative Life was formed following much enthusiasm and encouragement from spiritual leaders including Rev. Dr. Rowan Williams and Fr. Martin Laird OSA.

Chris Whittington, the workshop leader, was introduced to Christian meditation at the age of 19 during a period of formation at the Benedictine monastery of Prinknash Abbey, and has introduced the simple practice to thousands of people across the UK. Prior to establishing the School of Contemplative Life, Chris was a leader at the World Community for Christian Meditation.
